I find I have to watch myself and not go overboard with this filter. So when I use it, I try to apply it on a copy layer and then either create a mask, change the blending mode, or, mask it on part of the image with a brush.

Here is the original image:

and the one where I applied the oil paint filter (just on the Easter bunny except on it's eye and the eggs on it's collar.

​I will blame it on my old eyes but I am not seeing it. Just looks like a cropped picture IMO.
Look at the bunny, it's fur is fuzzier and look more natural than the other picture. But you're right with the crop.

Playing with the light slider (last one on bottom) and layer's transparency can make the Oil Paint filter less conspicuous.
