had my D80 fixed after an ERR display. only mirror mechanism was fixed/changed. shutter was not reset and now I have almost 300.000 shutter counts.

The non-volatile shutter count is stored in a camera chip. One way it is reset is when replacing that board with that chip. Possibly there are other ways, possibly when the shutter is replaced, but I think it is not revealed to us. The shutter count is NOT limited to 64K, shutter counts of 200,000 or 300,000 are not uncommon. 24 bits will store a count of 16+ million.

That's with a D80, but I've had a D50 that I've used a lot (more than 50.000), and when I sold it it said only 5.000 so in some way it went back to 0 without any replacement. Same with a D70s. Sure D80 added more bytes.

Ok, I just sold my D80 and it had about 80,000 clicks shooting in the exif data. Actually it was 79,000 plus. So that should lay the 64k theory to rest.
